its like they took the skill system of ff9 and said "oh hey. That being said, these tiny unoticable boosts splatered all over in a half hearted attempt to make it seem like there is more to the game than there actually is is just disgusting. i BELIEVE that means you get the initial +5 attack that you always have for mastering +5 attack, and then an additional 10 attack from the doubled effect of the equiped item. You always get a boost once you master it, and as the game VERY CLEARLY EXPLAINS, when you equip an item with a bonus you already have mastered, you get double the bonus instead. There is absolutely no way to screw up your character as said above, no mutially exclusive things, and most of the equipments end up in the shops later on too. Those 3 "tabs" show you your already mastered skills, those you are in the process of mastering, but also those that are not mastered but are on items you have in your bags or equipped to others (they appear in grey and will tell you the name of the item). The rest are for "attack", "defense" and "support" masteries (and masteries only). The first "tab" is everything added together, from all sources (mastery, items, titles and equipment improvements).

You can see everything that boosts your character from the equipment screen (Y button on the controller, not sure on the keyboard, but it's written at the bottom of the screen). There are caps for everything (100% reduction for the status effects for example), but for the most part, reaching that cap requires multiple items of "level" 3 of that boost (status resist level 3 is 100% though). You will get higher levels of the same skills to master too (in this case, level 2 is +10 and level 3 +15). You still get the boost from the item even when it has been mastered, so your +5 from the mastery add to the +5 of the item (and if it also has +5 in the random skills, it also adds that). There is only one of each "level" of each boost for each character to master.
